Equipment on the Tanker

What equipment is on the truck?

The Keysborough Urban Fire Brigade pumper tanker holds a lot of equipment for dealing with all the emergencies that it is called out to help with. This equipment is stored in the lockers at the rear and the sides of the truck. The following details some of this equipment:

Rear Pump Control

The primary pump controller is located on the rear of the pumper tanker, with a secondary control located on the top of the truck.

The control panel features gauges to monitor the pressure (both in and out) of the water as well as the water level in the tank. Four leavers control the flow to the outlets located on both the left and right of the truck, as well as foam mixing controls. To the left of the control panel, a high-pressure branch can be seen. This is a 'live' branch, meaning it has water to it all the time. The high-pressure branch is connected to an automatic winding spool with approximately 50m of hose.

Small Gear Locker

The small gear locker is located on the left side of the truck. It contains the basic firefighting equipment that would typically be needed when arriving at a job.

The top storage area holds many branches that attach to the end of the hose to control the delivery of water and lengths of hose used for connecting to hydrants.

The shelf at the bottom holds additional equipment used for connecting to hydrants.

Located on the right side of the truck, this locker holds a foam extinguisher (coloured blue), collapsible Rake-Hoes and broom, torches, sharps container, fire gloves, high-voltage gloves and an OxyViva resuscitation unit.

Hose Locker (Left)

Two hose lockers are located on the Pumper Tanker. Both are accessible from the rear of the truck.

The locker to the left holds rolled hoses in the top half and flaked hoses in the bottom.

The two standard hose sizes on the truck are 38mm and 64mm, typically in 30m lengths.

The locker to the right holds two trays of flaked 38mm hose in the top and 64mm hose in the lower tray.

BA Locker

The Keysborough Urban Fire Brigade is fortunate enough to own two Breathing Apparatus (or BA) sets.

The two sets will provide approximately 35 minutes of working time with two spare air cylinders.

The BA sets are worn where there is a health risk from smoke inhalation or exposure to any other toxic atmosphere.

In addition, this locker contains two Hazmat splash suits and a tool box.

A spare oxygen cylinder is stored here for use with the OxyViva resuscitation unit.

Foam Supply

The Pumper Tanker carries both Class A and Class B foam.

Class A foam can be used for fires containing Wood, Paper, Plastics etc.

Class B foam can be used for Liquid Fires such as petrol and diesel.

Also located here is a bag of soaker-all, an organic powder used to help absorb oil, petrol and diesel spills. It is preferable to contain such spills in order to minimise environmental contamination and to reduce the risk of fires.

A Class B (Dry Chemical) fire extinguisher is also stored here.

Rations Locker

Ration packs are supplied for emergency use by fire fighters. Each ration pack contains an assortment of high-energy food including dried fruits, chocolate, muesli (granola) bars and flavoured drink powder.

Water and electrolyte drinks are also stored for emergency use. Water and electrolyte intake are essential during fire fighting operations to maintain the health of the fire fighters.

Chainsaw Locker

The pumper tanker includes a chainsaw and associated safety gear.

This may be used during the construction of fire breaks. Specialist training is required to use a chainsaw.
