Is your home safe from fire?

• Have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket easily accessible and know how to use them.
  
• Make sure all electrical and heating appliances are in good working order and located in a safe place.
  
• Never Leave cooking, heaters, open fires and candles unattended.
  
• Store all matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  
• Do not dry clothes near heaters.
  
• Ensure cigarette ash and butts are properly put out. NEVER smoke in bed.

Some Facts about fire...

• The number one cause of fires in the home is cooking equipment.
  
• During a fire the air's normal oxygen level is drastically reduced, causing disorientation.
  
• About one in three reported fires start in the kitchen. Not paying attention while cooking was the key cause for almost all kitchen fires.
  
• The majority of home fire fatalities occur during the winter and at night when people are sleeping.

Don't deadlock yourself in...

Deadlocks are an important part of your home security.

However, if you are inside don't deadlock the door as this may prevent your family from exiting your home in the event of fire. If you need to deadlock the door, keep the key in the lock or have it close by incase you need to escape in a hurry.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

By Law, it is compulsory to have at least one operating smoke alarm in each level of your home.

Your smoke alarm battery should
be changed every six (6) months.

Have you checked the expiry date on your smoke alarm? If there is no expiry date visible or it is older than 10 years, the CFA recommend you purchase a new one.

If clothes catch on fire...

Is your family prepared in the event of fire?
Develop a home Escape Plan

Sit down as a family to create a home escape plan.

Have at least two exits from each room
and know the best route to exit your home.

if your home is multi-story, how will you exit from upstairs?

Have a meeting place outside your home
(i.e. the letterbox).

Never go back inside a burning house.
